Learning to drive

Alice is based in Alness. She covers the surrounding areas including Invergordon.

How do I go about it????

All you need is a desire to learn.

Anyone can learn to drive, from age 17 upwards. (unless you are receiving Disability Living Allowance, in which case you’re allowed to start driving at 16)

Before you are allowed to drive, you must apply for a Provisional Driving Licence (you can apply at 16) from the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency), application forms (D1) are available from any Post Office or online at the DVLA website.

Current cost for this licence is available on the DVLA website.Apply for Provisional Driving Licence

Alice’s driver training can offer you lesson times that suit you, including early mornings (before work/ college), daytime and evenings.

How many should I have a week???

Everybody has different needs, and Alice can provide you with as little or as many lessons you require.

Some of Alice’s pupils have 1 hour a week, some have 2, and some have 6!!

The main factor is what’s going to work best for you.

Most people learning to drive from scratch require between 30 and 40 lessons.

However this is only a guide and will depend on various factors including previous experience and how much private practice you can do outside your lessons.

semi-intensive courses

These are aimed at people who want to learn quickly or in a short space of time. They are tailor made to each individual. Alice can offer you a variety of courses to suit your needs, with up to 2 hours of tuition a day. (Any longer and concentration starts to go!)

Pass Plus

Alice is a Pass Plus Registered Instructor and offers Pass Plus courses.

These are aimed at individuals who have passed their test and looking to improve their skills and can benefit from cheaper insurance once the pass plus course is completed.

The savings can be huge and far out weigh the cost of the course. Grants up to £100 are available to help with the cost of the course.

Alice can provide you with the application forms or info can be obtained from the highland council, Road Safety Unit. Tel 01463 702690.

The course consists of 6 hours of tuition. To get the most benefit Alice advises covering the topics in two 3-hour sessions.

Topics covered on the course include night driving, driving in all weathers, town driving, out of town and rural roads, dual carriageways and motorway driving. Pass Plus
